What makes a good EDC flashlight?

  • edc flashlight

Fenix E12 – Small, tough and bright.

Size:  A good size would be under 5 inches.  Keep things simple, if it’s too big you aren’t going to want to carry it with you at all times.

  • Multiple output levels:  Having the option of different levels of output that will adapt to any situation is great.  A light with under 20 lumens is good for reading in the dark or finding the steps in a dark movie theater.  500 lumens would be useful in a dark scary alley.
  • Weatherproof:  A good EDC flashlight needs to be able to get wet in case you get caught out in the rain.
  • Impact resistance:  Carrying a flashlight with you at all times, sooner or later you will drop it.  It needs to be tough enough to handle the daily abuse.

During a Power Outage

Whenever you are involved in some sort of power outage, there will more than likely not be very many sources of light available. Keep in mind that you wouldn’t be able to simply flick a switch. Therefore, one of the first things that you would usually search for whenever an outage occurs is a flashlight. Having an EDC flashlight would be the difference in seeing in the dark versus tripping in the dark, or worst lost.

Unexpected Car Problems

Regardless of the age or condition of your vehicle, unexpected issues may arise with it as well. In most cases, you are going to need quick access to the part of your car under your hood in order to determine what is wrong and check for leaks, etc. Therefore, this would be a perfect time to have an EDC flashlight handy that you can quickly pull out of your glove compartment or pocket and put to use right away.  Some flashlights have a strobe function that can act as a beacon to alert others of your location.  Here is an emergency kit put together by the DMV.  A flashlight was the first thing on the list.

Home Repair and Improvement Projects

Another situation in which an EDC flashlight would really come in handy is during a home repair and/or improvement project. One of the most important things that you will need in order to be able to see exactly what you are doing is a flashlight – especially if you need to be able to study and examine dark areas closely. Having this type of flashlight ready to turn on and shine accordingly will make it much easier to see what you are doing and complete these types of projects quick and easily.

Global warming, 911 or a plain accident, you never know when something bad is going to happen.  Having an EDC flashlight with you at all times could save your life.

Here are Top 5 Choices for an EDC Flashlight

Fenix PD35 – this is the jack of all trades flashlight.  At 5.4 inches, it’s small enough to fit in your pocket or belt holster.  The 5 modes will let you adapt to any lighting condition you need, including a strobe mode.  Shock and waterproof it will handle the daily abuse of being with you at all times.  See our review HERE.

Surefire P2X – this is one of the best all round flashlights ever made.  A useful 15 lumen mode for everyday use and a blinding 500 lumen high output in case you need to blind someone.  Quality made in the USA.  It’s easy to see why it’s a top choice for military and law enforcement.

Fenix E15 – At 2.3 inches long this is the smallest flashlight on this list.  It will fit easily in your pocket or keychain.  Don’t let the size fool you.  It’s got a max output of 140 lumens.  To turn on the flashlight and cycle through the modes, simply twist the head.

Fenix E12 – I simply love this light.  It’s small and bright.  The best part is that it takes a normal AA battery.  Combine it with a rechargeable battery, you have an endless supply of light for free.  Just like all the Fenix flashlights, it’s impact resistant, waterproof and comes with a lifetime warranty.  See our review HERE.

HexBright FLEX– At 5.7 inches it’s a bit big for an everyday carry but it makes up for it with it’s adaptability.  This is one smart flashlight.  The brains of this light is powered by an Open-Sourced Arduino based programmable micro-controller that lets you program the light output from 1-500 lumens.  It even has a USB rechargeable battery.

EDC Flashlight Summary

There are so many different scenarios and situations in which a good flashlight is needed. Having an EDC flashlight handy at all times will make each of these unexpected situations much easier to deal with whenever they do arise. The problem that many consumers have is that they have to feel the need to justify this type of purchase upfront instead of realizing the simple fact that it may not justify itself until after the purchase has already been made. The general rule of thumb when it comes to an EDC flashlight and other types of emergency purchases is that it is better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it.
