The Coast HL8 is turned on by a on/off button on the right side of the head. To adjust the brightness from low/mid/high you twist the nob on the on/off button. The HL8 has Coast’s Pure Beam Focusing Optic which allows you to adjust the LED beam from super wide to a narrow beam that can illuminate up 678ft away. When set at the widest setting it covers almost your entire pre field vision. I found it really great when hiking through the woods because it can illuminate your feet and the trail ahead. The 4 AAA battery compartment can be removed from the headlight and attached to your belt or backpack via the 3 foot extension cord. This makes it great for all day use.
The Coast HL8 LED headlamp is made in USA so the quality is top notch. Coast started out making knives and multi-tools but has quickly become a leader in premium LED headlamps and flashlights. All Coast products are covered by a lifetime warranty against defects in materials and workmanship. The on/off button has a nice clicky feel and the output adjustment dial has just the right amount of firmness. The plastic feels really sturdy and solid. There are rubber seals around the battery compartment and on/off button makes this headlamp weather resistant.
There are lots of features to love about the Coast HL8 LED headlamp. Starting with the best features, brightness and runtime. At the high ANSI/NEMA FL-1 rated 344 lumen setting it will run for 19 hours! That’s long enough for a multi day camping trip. The adjustable beam makes this headlamp extremely versatile for any situation from repairs at home to walking your dog at night. Fantastic build quality and Coast’s lifetime warranty against defects in materials and workmanship.
I was a bit shocked by how big the headlamp was when I first opened it but I was using the Coast HL7 before. Once you start using the 344 lumens for 19+ hours, you’ll quickly get use to the size. Also the zoom ring is a bit too firm for my liking. You can zoom with just one hand but it’s not easy. Other than that, there’s not a lot of bad things to say about the HL8.
There are lots of headlamps available out there that promise superb functionality, but no other headlamp can beat Coast HL8 headlamp. It is packed with essential features and the latest technology to provide the performance and reliability you are looking for in a high performance LED headlamp.[easyazon_cta add_to_cart=”default” align=”left” asin=”B00A7RM1JE” cloaking=”default” height=”28″ key=”wide-orange” localization=”default” locale=”US” nofollow=”default” new_window=”default” tag=”bestflashhq-20″ width=”176″]
